The day you’ll discover that cabbage, rice and picarel make an astonishingly tasty combo
Its name might not say much to you, but its flavour will! If your visit coincides with this delicious gastronomic event, take note and discover a fish that locals call gerret (picarel), a staple in island cooking.
Toward the end of winter, in the town of Santa Eulària, an event named Picarel Fair is organized around this fish, one of the mainstays of local home cooking and the star ingredient in dishes such as rice with gerret and col, or marinated gerret. On this red-letter day, the main street of Sant Jaume and the Plaça Espanya fill up with stalls set out by some twenty participating restaurants, all offering samples of dishes featuring picarel. The fare ranges from classic recipes to more creative elaborations containing tastes and techniques adopted from global cuisine.
The day offers not only delicious food, but also includes children’s activities and live music as well as a maritime and craft market. To further highlight the event, throughout the week several local restaurants offer house specials centered on gerret – their chefs’ best at very reasonable prices. So, if you visit Santa Eulària des Riu at the end of the winter, don’t forget to check our activities agenda. A delectable event awaits you…
