Cultural Route
Santa Eulària des Riu is graced by some of the loveliest coves and beaches anywhere in Ibiza.…
Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Moors, Catalans… They all put to shore on our island, leaving in their wake flavours, music, knowledge, techniques, words, crops, traditions…myriad paths etched across time. That confluence of ancient seaways eventually led to the Ibiza of today, as civilized cultures mingled with lawless countercultures, such as the Turkish and Barbary pirates. Their continual raids were the inspiration for our characteristic church-fortresses and the watchtowers that guarded the horizon with apprehension. Our wells, irrigation channels and olive presses tell stories with an Arabic accent, as do the percussions of our traditional music. Even the cube-like forms that comprise our country dwellings came to us from across the Mediterranean, originating in the Near East. These influences were joined by those brought by Rome, such as the aqueduct of s’Argamassa and the old silver and lead mines of s’Argentera. The landscape is never silent. Nor are our traditions. Ask. Walk. Go down the visible and invisible paths of our history. Listen to the tales tucked within the walls of our heritage. Have a good voyage through time!
